I'd just like to mention that I got picked up in a pub by a nice lady a few years back

because I appeared shy and lacking in confidence and in fact downright antisocial, and she happened to like that sort of thing. So basically it's all bollocks and there's no need to modify your behaviour in distasteful ways, because there are no definite rules and people are all different.
Edit: although Feynman's cunning plan about how to get women to fuck you was "you just ask them", which always struck me as very rational advice.
