its a bit off to say, that would be funnier if....

I disagree

but wouldn't tell someone they aren't as funny as they can be as it crushes what they have done which is horrible (especially as all humour is subjective).

I'm sure it can be improved upon,

but not as simply or as obviously as 'shopping technique.
Also, as you say it's more objective, so you can say 'if you add this it'll be smoother/more realistic' or whatever.
