I think it's properly dead.Although I'd rather take another whack at it than let my Dad and his half arsed manner be the final say.
He doesn't have any HFS+ recovery stuff as far as I'm aware, and I'm not willing to pay for a program that might not even work, so I'm happy to leave it as a lost cause if I can't sort it soon. I've got a new drive on the way that's double the size, but it's just fucking inconvenient.

Places can just recover the data by physically taking the palattes out and reading them.I have no idea how much it costs though.

Apparently it costs thousands to get it done professionally.My brother does a lot of recovery stuff, but with NTFS rather than HFS+, so I might need to wet his beak a bit.

Alternatively you can purchase the exact same harddrive off ebay, presuming its an older one.Take the palattes out of old harddrive with data on, swap with new blank harddrive.
Of course this is sort of dependent on how easy harddrives are to take apart, and they aren't. Stupid magnets.
