Ive read watchmen on the recommendation of b3tans (8/10)
And your right about the need for some sort of catalyst to kick people up the arse and straighten them out. People said that world war 2 was the war to end all wars. Pfft, how stupid does that seem now? Well anyway I dont have anything against emo's per-se, they are just an easy target. My real vitriol and source of beleif that national service would be a good thing is Scallys. Burberry cap? Off you go to boot camp son. To say that emo's and goths are just useless is over-generalising however the slothful and miserable nature of these people goes against my grain. I've a friend who is an emo (in all ways except style) He tried to kill himself once and everyone was like 'aww poor mr-x'. As soon as I got a moment alone with him I gave him hell. I've no time for self pitying types, I find it beneath contempt, especially in western countries where even the homeless and destitute have it better than 90% of the world.

The War to End all Wars was WWI, hence why the title is generally referred to ironically.
Depression isn't exactly useful but it's reasonable considering the facts, if you honestly care about the world and other people then just the sheer nature of humanity is enough to be monumentally downsome. The main reason the western world is so depressed and sick of itself when the rest of the world is starving, dying, under genocidal attacks is because we have the knowledge, we know about it without having felt it. To the temperament of someone undergoing war or starvation it's much more simple: it's here, try to survive. They care about keeping themselves alive, their thoughts and morality, ideals and ambitions are all based on whatever situation they are in. That happens all over the world, people have to think about themselves.
The ones who never have it hard and never really have to think about themselves, they are the ones which end up seeing and worrying about everyone's troubles. Not true of everyone in that position of course, some are just greedy bastards who naturally think about themselves, but for a lot of other people it is just paralysing to have to worry about all the fates of all people equally, and given that they are all interdependant the act of trying to help one group will ultimately destroy another.
That's why people are depressed, although I put it more down to the fact that the way life is marketed these days is fucking boring. If the world had random duels and crimefighting vigilantism I'm sure fewer people would be clinically depressed.
