# It's possible/likely that Deckerd is a REPLICANT.
Serious RIS.

Apocalypse Now - Classic film, but Historical?

Deckerd, possibly a replicant. An artificial being but not a robot.

But what's the link to Apocalypse Now?

# Apocalypse Now = Vietnam War = Historical event
Harrison Ford in bladerunner = Robot.

er... that's about it.

Very nerdy, but then I said that in the first place.

# Not robot!
Robots = metal and plastic.

Replicants = flesh and blood. Cloned, genetically modified humans with artificial personalities.

# Man, are people getting seriously specific about the definition of a robot...
Pass round the spliff guys, stop hogging it.

# Goodness!
That's Harrison Ford?
Doesn't look like him!

OK I am de-RIS'd.

But replicants ain't robots. No Sir.

# Ooo now we're really plumbing the dpths of the subject...
Do genetically engineered androids qualify as robots?

class?

To categorise a replicant as a robot is simply incorrect. It is like suggesting that a rocking horse is a pony on the grounds that they look similar and you can ride them both. One is clearly alive and the other is not.

Androids are (by looking at the root of the word) things that look like men. It's a term commonly given to any kind of humaniform robot.

R2D2 is a robot because he doesn't look human. C3PO is an android.
Bishop from Aliens is (although squishy) is an humaniform robot and thus termed an android (although I understand they prefer the term Artificial Person).

A genetically modified lifeform is simply a variant of that species. IMO a replicant is human. Artificially created, yes, but definitely a human.

Sadly it's 0120 here so I won't be around to see any reply. A shame because pedantry is the essence of geekery :) 'nite
