There are few other things to be doing between 1am and 5am.I believe it comes from someone getting a paid-for camwhore to put a shoe on her head instead of doing the usual activities.
We don't limit ourselves to just shoes on head though, and Socks On Ears has had some success. One time appearances from Calculator, Towel, Phone and Mouse On Head have also been observed.
I think the main attraction to the sport is the folks that get overly irate about being asked to put shoes on their head.
