At the moment I am just using photos and modifying themas my comp is being super slow and I am sans tablet. But I have new RAM on order and should have a new tablet soon too.
However, the simple way is to start at the trunk, go off on little runs, and then add more runs off them, but reduce the brush size as you go along. Blurs help to mask most inadequacies ;)
