Ok, PS 10ex can open .u3d, .3ds, .obj, .kmz, and Collada file formats. There's been a problem with the ones I've tried (.obj and .3ds). Someone on the Adobe forum suggested that it may have something to do with smoothing applied in the source 3d app.
I just want to try as many formats as possible. What I want to end up with is a very smooth sphere which has a flat texture mapped on to it.
