
Errm press 'Q'. You can then use the brush and eraser to lay down a mask. Press 'Q' again and you'll be back in normal view with the selection round your area. It's like using that rubbery masking fluid for those who did art before computers...
What I usually do is get a rough outline with the magic wand and then finesse it with quick mask.

It lets you go back and edit what's visible without erasing the original image
