though I had a moment this morning when I realised that actually, he's probably going to win. It made me very sad.

# Obama has a 15% lead now apparently.
So long as about 8% of the country aren't lying racist bastards, he should win.
Fuck.

# Remember that the one with the most votes doesn't always win
The one that wins is the one the establishment wants to govern and the people be damned.

# nah
think he's blown it. if the democrats had just been in power he'd have a chance, but most of the country want a change, don't know the last time a part lasted more than 2 terms in their country.

was quite depressed when i started reading my old uni's student paper the other week and saw that one of their "columnists" had responded to a letter by saying "if you don't like the current government then you get the chance to change it every 4 years"

FFS we'd best not start following the americans and having such a rigid regime for general elections, will fuck us right up

# Like the British system is any better...

# at least we've got more than two parties
if it all goes to the wall they're screwed and will do as the Germans of the second reich did and pick an extreme to lead them out.

also, in theory a general election can be called (and held) at any time between a new government being formed, and 5 years after that date. not on a fixed schedule. therefore we're (theoretically) not stuck with a government for a fixed period of time.

there's the problem of FPTP vs Prop Rep, but it'd take too long to change the system in this country to prop rep to have any immediate impact, and it's not necessarily a better system (once again see 1930s Germany)
