Well in a way, yeah.The book just dealt with the characters so much better. I didn't like the lack of Albert Neri and Luca Brasi in the film. It felt more like you were entering their world in the books.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the book.Luca Brasi is in the film, Solono (The Turk) stabs his hand to the bar & strangles him.
