It absolutely was a myth and there was somebody from the Birmingham council on the TV not too long ago saying so.
edit:/ I'm talking about the fact that people say that BCC tried to change Xmas to winterval as some kind of PC drive. It was donkey's years ago and the term was used to brighten up a few shopping days.

there they were celebrating Winter Solstice then the Christianised Romans invaded stole there symbolic tree and imported a Pine Tree which they called a Christmas Tree - The Log the Pagans burned on the Solstice was also taken and substituted for a chocolate cake! and before you know it their whole religion was assimulated and Christianised...
