the very first Metal Gear was a 2d game, the second was called 'Metal Gear Solid' and started the celebrated eponymous game franchise.
The first ps1 Metal Gear Solid game was a triumph tho and was never, IMO, beaten, by any of it's following childer, which altho damned pretty and clever, for some reason, seemed obsessed with the narrative and not the game.

That was SOOO fucking clever, and the need to do certain things IRL to complete the game, the use of frequencies, and the need to physically do certain deeds to your controller and memory cards and such, oh, man, SUCH a clever game, I was totally immersed and convinced by it.
I've never played a game like it before or since, totally blew me away.
