I often wonder how to do it without affecting the background..

To do this sort of image

simply take the back end(including all background pieces) and bring them over towards the front. Then through careful use of the delete tool, you can merge.

Blending animal heads and bodies etc are a different kettle of fish. But they work in similar ways to that above.
