similar experiences have been had by myself.I played stoned chess with a mate, thinking that since the only game I had for the PC for a while was Battle Chess, that would make me an expert. He whipped me in about 20 minutes, which is when I considered that playing against, and beating P2 (controlled by me) on Battle Chess, does not necessarily mean that I am good at proper chess.
