Being an industrial city bloke myself, I'm always astonished that people ever want to revisit, and even elevate, this kind of horror.
Lowry's stuff, for me, always screamed about the horrible shit my grandparents had to live with, and that I'm so grateful I haven't had to put up with.
But then again, I like reading John Steinbeck and listening to Woody Guthrie - perhaps I'm doing exactly the same thing, just on a different continent!
