Use scanlines,
After colour pallet and frame numbers, scanlines are probably best at reducing those Kbs.

ashally the FAQ now says animations can be 400kb
not sure when that came into effect. If a few 400kb anims get posted in a row, my poor old browser really starts to struggle.

It was a bad move.
Generally, there is no reason an animation needs to be that size. The whole link to big stuff idea worked better and stopped the board shuddering to a halt with massive gifs.
