The mountains are quite good...
is there a fractal generation scheme for them or is it just polygons and then a texture render.

It's a procedural terrain, well 2 actually.
and it generates on the hoof each time you use one. It has some odd way of handling the large numbers of polygons, without causing the world to implode.
Something to do with computers, I think.
