it doesn't work unless you splice it with another plant that has a developed root system.
A friend of mine successfully spliced a strawberry plant with a hops plant. The resulting brew was impossible to drink.

I should point out that this idea of 'splicing'
is simply slicing a nice long diagonal cut on the stem & sticking a similarly sliced plant on top. From a similar genus.

cellotape is made from cellulose and is fine for taping plants together.
