# To me
it looks like how IDM sounds.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 22:50, archived)
# That's a good description
It's like organically synthetic, or synthetically organic, or something like that. Not natural-looking but not constructed either.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 22:59, archived)
# Exumptly!
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:06, archived)
# IDM?
Sorry, I'm a bit slow.

# "Intelligent Dance Music"
www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:11690

Basically mad stuff like Aphex Twin. Never been a fan :/
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:04, archived)
# With you.
Some of it is ok - I wouldn't say I'm a signed up fan.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:08, archived)
# It means "Intelligent Dance Music"
An uber-poncey title no doubt dreamed up by a fan of the genre who thought it made him somehow cleverer than fans of other musical types.
Includes music by Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada Squarepusher and Venetian Snares.

Also known as "braindance" or electronica by the less poncey.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:04, archived)
# Looks like some Breakcore and some Electronica to me.
I've always disliked the term 'IDM' too.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:06, archived)
# Yeah it's right up it's own arse
Like the title "progressive rock"
But it DOES kinda has a specific meaning. I take it to mean something less ambient than electronica but more chilled than breakcore.
And as much as I dislike the name I love the music.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:08, archived)
# But Venetian Snares is just Breakcore.
His new album, Filth, has leaked by the way.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:12, archived)
# Yeah primarily
but a lot of his more classically influenced stuff fits a lot more into the IDM/braindance category.
Not a perfect example though

And i bet that's something of a clue to haw it sounds...I do like Venetian Snares, but it can really give you a fucking headache.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:18, archived)
# YES YES YES thanks for the tip-off
:D
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:35, archived)
# Breakcore?
Is that like skiffle?
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:09, archived)
# SHRUG.
Today I found two new artists I like. I am happy.

# "Ska/Drum & Bass/Hardcore"
HELL NAW.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:14, archived)
# Ska/Drum?
WTF?

Ska/Drum? Ska - That's The Selector, or The Special AKA - it's already got drums!

What is going on here?
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:16, archived)
# Ska /// Drum & Bass /// Hardcore
It's hard to explain really, but I love it to bits
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:27, archived)
# Well, allow me to me happy for you.
You're awfully young, please don't expect me to understand.
Sorry.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:14, archived)
# I'm TWENTY AND ONE HALF.
Doug Paisley (folk) and Caroline Keating (singer-songwriter). THEY'RE BOTH REAL GOOD.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:16, archived)
# Yes.
As I mentioned, I'm more than twice your age. I'm really not criticising, that would be stupid of me.
It's just that I saw Devo, the Clash, and The Buzzcocks before you were even born, I have difficulty relating to these genre-mash things...
I'm sorry.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:19, archived)
# I guess I shouldn't mention shoegaze then?
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:20, archived)
# Urgh i remember telling my girlfriend about My Bloody Valentine
she looked at me and said "Don't you mean BULLET for my Valentine?"

*shudders*
She does have awful taste in music, bless her.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:22, archived)
# Urrrggghhhhh.
If that's your type of thing Bardo Pond make some rather good psyche-rock/shoegaze.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:26, archived)
# What does that mean?
I'm really not being difficult - but what does that actually mean?

I thought some of the Mad-Chester bands were shoe-gazers, I'm evidently wrong.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:25, archived)
# It's a genre which came from Alternative rock and peaked in the mid 90's.
"Common musical elements of shoegazing consist of distortion, droning riffs and a "wall of sound" from, sometimes two, noisy guitars. Typically, two distorted rhythm guitars are played together to give an amorphous quality to the sound. Although lead guitar riffs were often present, they were not the central focus of most shoegazing songs."

# So, The Jesus & Mary Chain, yes?
Seen them too.

;-)

I have asked you repeatedly, nicely, etc etc etc
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:40, archived)
# Huh?
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:44, archived)
# I know you have no issue with the *actual* names thing
but could you please stop with me, I have asked you before.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:45, archived)
# Fine.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:46, archived)
# Thank you for your understanding, sir.

# Devo eh?

Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kraftwerk being the following.....if memory serves.

I'm actually rather proud.

(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:24, archived)
# Kraftwerk?
Then you are somewhat acquainted with the forefathers of IDM then.(and just about every other kind of electronic music I understand)
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:25, archived)
# Ahhh.... Right!
All is becoming clear.

# Short answer no
but it can sound a lot like that in a "Musique Concrete" kinda way. It can embrace a totally offbeat and time signature-free jazzy sound but all the sounds are usually synthesized.
(, Tue 24 Mar 2009, 23:14, archived)
# Ahhh....
I see.
