I still never got round to learning a proper image manipulation program

This was done in MS Paint
Any recommendations on something simple to learn use? (And also, god forgive me, how to do TOAP better?)

Do a black text and put a coloured text on top of it

even that clumsy fake shadowing makes it more readable.

And the GIMP is free but I don't know how easy it is to use, it always annoys me that it works slightly differently from Photoshop.

I've tried GIMP

but couldn't work it out, I'm sure there're tutorials somewhere, but I couldn't find them.

Thanks for the tip, stuff with white edges does look jagged.

REally easy.

If you right click in the layer of the text you'll get a menu. Select Blending options and you get lots of lully toys to play with!
