It's on Steam, a 24 hour free trial for everybody. Also something like 40% off the game this weekend in case you like it so much you want to play it for more than a day.

Can I download the file onto my pc and then shunt it over to my laptop which might actually stand a chance of playing the thing.

# Nah, you need to download the Steam program on the PC you want to play it on
Then inside the Steam program you can browse the games store (similar to iTunes I suppose), and it'll then download your game for you. As soon as it's done you launch the game from within Steam, and Steam is used for choosing multiplayer servers etc.
