VLC Media player is a download worth getting.
Free and takes up next to no space, also, it will open pretty much any media file you like :)

Nicely, already got that
so can I convert it using VLC to other formats iMovie might play ball with?

it works as a converter but sometimes it's a bit dodgy.
otherwise you can try to use ffmpeg directly, if you only want to change format

.vob is a DVD video file I think, with all the audio, video, subtitles etc in there with it.
Probably try AutoGK to convert it to something playable

Try renaming to .mpg
Your have a part of a DVD there. Just an mpeg with a different extension.

handbrake to convert
nice easy use wrapper for the osx port of mencoder (mplayers converter) - converts to most formats
mplayer for osx also plays most formats back ... funnily O_o
vlc works well with perion & flipformac codecs, but also quicktime player does the job if you've a high end mac otherwise you have to wait ages for it to pre render
osx mplayer (for me) works best with mkv's
