it was shot on 16mm transferred to 32mmalthough they did make 8mm films together in high school.
The DVD looks fine to me, though I've heard some people say the effects look better on VHS (I have both).. the Bruce Campbell commentary is great.
I don't know anything about BluRay but I imagine it is the new betamax
