because they know what they're doing, whereas the average man on the street can only take what they say at face value on the assumption that the media is not fundamentally corrupt. But the only alternative to that is state censorship. Hobson's choice...

I don't know if you'd be happy with making all government policy a state secret in case the Daily Mail reports it in a stupid way.
