From my minor experiences with the game I know the dm can have a player character within the main team.

ah... I really don't know enough about it... the nearest thing I've gotten to D&D, aside from Eye of the Beholder and baldurs Gate (:D) was one game of Advanced HeroQuest that my cousin had set up; I played for 10 mins then got bored...
