i generally
try something, swear at its stupid interface, swear at the programmers and swear at it again. then i install photoshop and get confused by all the workingness of it and go back to gimp. (also my work machine is linux and only has gimp on it so i just got used to it.)
it's an irritating program written by people who've not yet learned that programmers shouldn't be allowed to design the interface. people speak quite well about gimpshop which tries to rearrange it into something sensible. but i'm used to it and once you know where things are hidden it's good enough for what i use it for.

I downloaded it a while ago
I found it more offensive than either gimp or photoshop.
no doubt I'll be told by some genius that I'm omgwrong
but meh, fuck the geniuses!
paint.net is passable but that's annoying too.
despite issues with photosoup ui it's still the easiest one to just sit down and play with
if you truly want horror, download blender :D

that's the one! maybe i'll just install this copy of photoshop that i happen to have lying around and be done with it. yeah, that's the ticket.
i have enough horror in my daily life. it may not mean much to most here but i use maple on a daily basis. one of these days i may top myself.

paint.net is okay
it's good for me as a stepping stone, although i have no idea how the clone stamp works as it doesn't seem to do anything

you have to clone stamp on the same layer as the thing you want to clone, as far as I can tell
:)
