Fair enough.Fiddling around with things is the best way to get to grips with it.
In the layers section, you can select the Layer Properties with the little hand at the bottom right. Selecting the different modes, like additive, and such will give different effects on different layers.

I usually try the layer properties each time I add one to see what they dobut I didn't know you could get this sort of thing, unless it was overlay above an already coloured layer (totally new to ALL this kind of thing).
