The films weren't as good, no.I really like the manga, the motive is and always has been a flimsy cover-up for his want for power, really, but that's not the point of the story.
I think lots of it is really funny, I love the artwork and the 'battle of wits' between L and Kira is quite enjoyable.
At least, in the manga. In the films they ruined it.
