it is a convenient location for me and my friends to chat in an informal way.
We also use skype to chat in this manner, as a group, but twitter has the advantage that all my friends can be in the same chat and all their friends can too.
If I am talking to a friend then any mutual friends can see it, but people who do not know one or the other (or either) of us are not influenced.
I agree that 'I am making tea' blog style posts are toss, but it is more for @lordmanley style posts that I use it and it is a nice way to chat. Like facebook updates, but with aimed replies and none of the cack.

Many users collect followers and just put small updates on. I have 10 or so friends who I chat through during the day.
It is not for everyone, but it is a useful central location for communicating in a banal and meanigless way, without getting trapped like B3ta does to me ;¬)
