But after having picked up a couple, we were utterly tired of them trying to invent sudden roadblocks up ahead to try and get us off our route and passed their house/school/tobacco plantation. And I'm not even talking about the constant pressure to buy second-rate cigars or to visit said plantations.

you pull over to offer some lady a lift and as soon as you drive off she whips out clipboard and asks you to complete a survey/buy a time share/join a charity.
They should try that.
