Right click anywhere on the desktop
Click on Arrange Icons By
Make sure 'Align To Grid' does not have a check mark next to it.
Icons will no longer snap to the invisible grid and can be placed so close together that it's practically indecent.
That's Windows. Mac OS probably has something similar, since they both have pretty much identical features in every other respect.
