# Hello did you get me that job in Oslo yet thanks
(, Sat 16 Jan 2010, 22:40, archived)
# Yep
I'm currently in a crummy student room in Kringsja. It's actually really quite warm out there now, it was -3 all day and the ice on the roads is melting a bit and the snow is turning to crumbly brown stuff like high-quality tablet. It was -16 when I landed last Saturday. Sounds stupid but I preferred it that way, except on the vast swathes of pavement where they hadn't cleared the snow and it turned to three cm thick ice.

I learned one thing last weekend: a lake may be totally frozen, and it may have about 10cm of snow lying on top of it, but between the snow and the ice is a layer of water that gets your feet very wet when you sink down to it. Then your feet are like blocks of ice all day.

I've also learned that Oslo is really, really fucking expensive.

Also that I've a good chance of finding a decent flat in a decent part of town before Thursday. Life is good.

Edit: Ha, I'm a fucking idiot who can't even read. No, I didn't get you that job yet. Our cleaner's still there, and she's actually quite cute, so I'm inclined to leave her hanging around a few months longer. Sorry about that. :(

# Sounds ace.
I visited Oslo last summer. Or maybe it was the summer before. And certainly experienced the fucking expensive thing. Quid for a kitkat. Fuck me.

How long's the sun up at the moment? Does it feel a bit like you're nocturnal?

Also, post pix of clnr thx

Also, what is your actual job? Though I've been a keen observer throughout this entire process I don't think I actually know what it is you do.

# 6 hours of sun
rises at half nine in the morning, sets at half three in the afternoon. or thereabouts. about 8 hours of light all told, though it's pretty lacklustre stuff, especially today since we've got dismal grey skies.

i pity the people in trondheim, probably getting about 3 hours of sun. and already, like everyone else in oslo, i console myself with the thought of how many hours of sun i'll be getting in the summer.

i may get arrested posting pics of cleaner. but i shall try.

also, i do science. i sit at a computer for hours either trying to integrate stuff analytically, or i write really crappy programs to do it for me. all of it goes wrong. then someone gives me another three years' money. it's a good life if you get lucky enough to get into it. somehow i did.

# Interesting. It's a shame you can't just sign up for jobs really.
Sunlight when I was there really disorientated me. I was there in late June, and it was still light at midnight.

You should get the train to Bergen. But not till it's light out. I watched a real time 7 hour HD film of the trip recently because I need a hobby and/or friends. Here: nrkbeta.no/2009/12/18/bergensbanen-eng/

# I thought it was really beautiful.
Amazing variety of sceneries across just that stretch.

# I think you should find some friends
I would suggest finding a group of people who also enjoy watching videos of journeys to Bergen. That way if conversation fails you can all fall back on talking about how the trip in winter compares to the one in summer.

I aim to visit Bergen in early summer or so. When it feels warm to people who've stayed in Norway for a few months but too cold to attract all the tourists. I've heard good things about it.

# I would also accept a job in Bergen if that's easier for you to wangle.

# Right now the Norwegian government doens't acknowledge I exist
because they've cocked up their computer systems and I can't register for an ID number. (Implying I can also neither get a bank account nor a doctor.) So managing to get you any job might be a bit tricky for a few months. But give me some time. Give me some time...

# In exchange I have added you to my b3ta friends
You are welcome, dude.

I hope that you get an identity and a nice flat soon.

Trondheims not bad at all. I'm in Hammerfest atm. Arrived 14 days ago, havent seen the sun yet.

# We've got a thing at work showing where the sun is
and what parts are in day and what parts are in night.

I wouldn't bet on seeing much of the sun in Trondheim at the minute.

I also need to go to bed.
