Mainly because it is the code version of a road accident.Lots of parts strewn all over hell's creation with only the vestiges of the roadbed visible.

But no changes in architectures.Apple, as well as other non-wintel companies, have
used several. Porting of Flash to anything other than
intel based units lagged if not stopped for ages.
But the key point is that Flash has never really
been refactored --ever. Tons of bucks in and
none of it used to tidy up the code base.
