Oooo, that would be tellingLayers. They are split like a wood block or screenprint into the colours I took from the original matchboxes. so for the sand crawler I started with a full rusty silhouette and then built up the detail with the blue and a bit of highlight with the white.
and then I used some filters to match the original texture
