This is a normal post He got the last line wrong; it should be "Next Tuesday"
Interesting vid though, but in a democracy you get what you vote for, and the voting for tough sentencing is on the back of the fear mongering by Fox etc. who have no concept of statistics...

This is a normal post Yeah, but when people with criminal records are routinely denied the vote
it's not about people getting harsh sentences after having voted for it, it's one demographic voting to have the other lot locked up and systematically disenfranchised.

This is a normal post Good point.
I was speaking to some Merkin republican types the other day who were completely convinced that 50% of the US population are net takers from the taxation pool. Their theory is that this group will never vote for anyone other than people who will help them personally (hence what seems to UK eyes like irrational hatred for Obamacare)

These guys were convinced there was a civil war in urban America on the way as the inner cities became increasingly Ghetto-fied and basically were equating unemployed with criminal behaviour in one massive sweeping generalisation.

Meanwhile Fox whispers in their ear and stokes up the fear by over-emphasising non-typical examples (e.g. the 10 year old who stepped out in front of a pickup truck on Thursday and the mob who beat up the driver who stopped to see if the kid was hurt.)

They will continue to vote for tougher sentencing, they will continue to vote for the right to bear arms, and they will vote against universal healthcare for all. The worrying thing is that they see all these things as part of the same agenda...

This is a normal post Very progressive stuff.
there will always be the 'lock the doors and throw away the key' crowd, but we really have to examine how we deal with an ever increasing perennial problem. A wider product of the 'have/have not' society.

This is a normal post 'The house I live in'
is an interesting doco that covers some of the same issues, and is a bit depressing but worth a watch.

This is a normal post Should've mentioned the privatization of the prison system.
