Subtle advertising is great. People will return to your site. It won't look like a security flawed spamhole. People will find and engage with your content rather than being clueless as to what they can click on that sea of spam. If you're trying to build engagement leave the adverts off and get people to swallow your content and build some ads in silently and subtlety once your user base is large enough.

but this kind of thing is more of a one-hit wonder (if that). My last experience of making this kind of site (which did actually have some regular new content) was suddenly getting 1m+ visitors in a week, then a huge drop-off. People liked it, shared it, then moved on.
But thanks for the feedback - I have removed the side ads (which were only on wide screens anyway). And I'm hopefully only using reputable ad companies.
