When you see him land, he often has his bum sticking right out, and his body basically hinges at the hips, with his knees not locked but roughly straight. So his core muscles (plus the fat tyres) soak up the momentum, like a load of elastic bands.
I'm not saying it isn't astonishing, mind.

Yes, you (but not literally) can damp surprisingly well some things, if skilled enough.
