If you tried a DK2 headset
then yes, the resolution isn't there yet. I tried Elite Dangerous in it and could barely read any of the cockpit displays. The Vive and the release version of the Rift will be higher resolution and lower latency. The downside being you'll need an even more expensive pc to run it.
Think of it like mobile. The first generation of smartphones were garbage. It took Apple a couple of iterations of the iPhone before they got that to a state we'd consider properly usable. Nowadays every bugger's got a smartphone of some description.
