The NHS party line is currently to say "don't drink at all", which is proven to definitely shorten your life expectancy.
The government guideline on "units per week" is purely a political morality statement to show how hard they are on the evil demon drink...which is why it keeps being reduced, not because of medical studies.
Also how individual peoples bodies process alcohol varies hugely with things like body mass, height and indeed your genetic makeup. Saying the units per week is the same for me (6 foot 4, 13 stone) as for a skinny midget is totally bollocks - It should at least be a calculation like BMI (well that's a flawed calculation...but point still stands).
