Yes Flatland is classic...
...I also recommend an unofficial sequel Flatterland by Ian Stewart.
It's set sometime later, featuring A. Squares precocious grand-daughter Vikki, and has similar sociological commentary but for the modern day.

You couldn't evolve a bum hole, since that would mean a continuous digestive tract, which would mean 2 separate parts in 2 dimensions.
