Strange how people forget that Israel's also not in Europe.
(one might argue that Russia/Iceland/Turkey aren't entirely European either).
And anyway, it's only because the EBU (a collective of TV stations) is based in Europe, but has worldwide membership.
Fun fact: most of (ex-French) North Africa are automatically allowed to enter the contest too.
