Personally I think it lacks the tension in the facial muscles that comes from an intense expression.
Where the muscles pulling in opposite directions would be tensed at the same time, which should tighten up and crease the face along sharp lines. This seems to be modelling some mass in the face, but just letting it sag under its own weight.
