I assume that means the conjunctivitis is viral, and chloramphenicol will be useless?

It's possible (though unlikely) that the conjunctivitis could be caused by an opportunistic bacterial infection.
You're right to hold off on the antibiotics, but viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious so please maintain good hand hygiene whilst experiencing symptoms. An alcohol based hand gel should be considered if you plan on being in public areas where soap and water are unavailable.
