Surely I'm not the only one who realises this guy is severely mentally ill.
He absolutely needs locked up, but I'm not sure a standard custodial sentence going to do any good in the long term...

Sure, he might have serious problems.
However, the attack seems a bit too organised for a psychosis and the evidence shows a degree of prejudice and planning, including a farcebook post announcing it.
Also, prison is cheaper than a dedicated hospital, that's where a lot of ill people are sent.

Mental illness does not necessarily prevent the aflicted from assessing and managing risk.
