They were a really good idea, until the aeroplane was properly developed. Then they were redundant.

They are still a really good idea, for the right type of cargo. Like canals, they can move things using very small carbon footprint, as long as you aren't in a hurry.

Only because they were so slow and expensive. The sort of person who could afford to travel on one was not going to put up with Ryanair service for the four days or so it would cost to cross the Atlantic.
