I got taught surveying by a couple of elderly lecturers who taught us plane table, alidades and chains (as a measure, not the physical object)
I failed the subject, mainly because I took the opportunity in parks to get high, and when I repeated they had a new bloke who taught us with theodolites and CAD. Australia was long metric, but some of the old parks had been laid out in chains
