I got taught surveying by a couple of elderly lecturers who taught us plane table, alidades and chains (as a measure, not the physical object)
I failed the subject, mainly because I took the opportunity in parks to get high, and when I repeated they had a new bloke who taught us with theodolites and CAD. Australia was long metric, but some of the old parks had been laid out in chains

Multiplying up one path then dividing down another
shows the units don't make sense compared to each other, some of those numbers are wrong (as in you don't get the same when converting one way compared to another, I'm sure there are 3ft to a yard for example)
