Forget chains...
Those tyre socks you get at Halfords are the bollox. Put them on my VW Up! last time it snowed properly in the midlands and was driving round stuck 4x4s. They are honestly brilliant and well worth the money to keep around, and they're not destructive to the road or driveways either.

Tempted to get a set to sling in the garage as my road is on such a slope that half an inch makes it unpassable.

Yep, pretty good stuff.
Not a long-term solution, but handy for getting caught out. Lucky to get them to last a week though, and don't leave them on if you get to clear tarmac or they'll be torn up before you know it.
