So Carlo Gesualdo's murder of his first wife and her lover gets overlooked because of his amazing compositions. Similarly Caravaggio, as you note. Benjamin Britten's enthusiasm for young boys is barely mentioned because of the quality of his composition. Even Wagner gets played (occasionally) in Israel. But no-one thinks Gary Glitter's music was interesting enough to eclipse his crimes. The break point seems to be Michael Jackson.
